Pinterest launches iPad and Android apps

After months of anticipation, Pinterest has gone all in on mobile with the launch of a native iPad app and its debut on Android.

The company announced the new software at a party on Wednesday. Version 2.0 of the iPhone app is also now available in iTunes. It introduces a 2-column layout and includes better usability and improvements to stability and performance.

The announcement was followed by an official blog post from Pinterest detailing the new apps
The Android app has been custom designed for Android phones and tablets of all cost, speed and size. Meanwhile, the post puts forth the iPad app as possibly “the best Pinterest experience yet.”

Pinterest has been on a tear lately, rising to become the third most visited US social network earlier this year. Data from comScore estimates the site received almost 20 million unique visitors in March.
The firm also found that those visitors ”spend more money, more often, and on more items” than any of the other top social media sites.

The service, which was one of the fastest to reach 10 million active users, hit a landmark last week when it dropped its invite-only status and opened up to all. The company also recently redesigned its website and revamped its repinning feature.

In May, the company announced that it had closed a $100 million funding round led by Japanese ecommerce giant Rakuten. Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners and FirstMark Capital also participated in the round.

Rakuten’s investment was followed up by a collaboration that involved the addition of “Pin it” buttons to several of its Web properties.
